Tallahassee Police Chief Dennis Jones has applied for the chief of police position in New Smyrna Beach to be closer to his family.

Jones would not comment on his job prospects but David Northway, spokesman for the Tallahassee Police Department, said the police chief would like to move back to the New Smyrna Beach area, where he is originally from.

He is one of more than 150 applicants for the position, said Northway. If he’s chosen for the position, Jones would be leaving his $133,484 annual salary.

Before becoming police chief in May 2007, Jones served as chief of police at the Daytona Beach Police Department before retiring in 2006.

He spent more than 20 years with DBPD, where he also served as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Daytona Beach.

When asked whether Jones’ pursuit of the position was connected to a current internal investigation involving an officer operating outside their jurisdiction, Northway said there was no connection.

“It is not connected to this investigation in any way, shape or form,” said Northway.
