TPD Warns Against Latest Financial Scam

News Release: Tallahassee Police Department

The Tallahassee Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit would like to remind everyone to be mindful of web-based scams that are ever-present in our daily lives. TPD has recently fielded complaints from residents who received official-looking email correspondence that appeared to be court-related documents. These documents claimed that criminal charges were pending against the recipient. The scammers ultimate goal was to convince the victim to send payment via money order or pre-paid debit card in order to avoid further legal troubles. A governmental agency would never attempt to resolve a legal matter in this way. If you should ever receive one of these emails, please contact your local law enforcement or simply delete them from your server. An example of one such email is below and another is attached to this release:

FINAL NOTIFICATION

This is to inform you that we have received, a Pending law Action against your name and your Social Security Number.

The time is NOW; reason being it is a VERY SENSITIVE MATTER.

This is the last NOTIFICATION you will receive in regards to this. Pending Docket number is, ADR59832.

In order to get additional information in regards to this matter you MUST call within 6 hours of receipt of this e-mail message.

Should you ignore this communiqué, we WILL advice our CLIENT to PROCEED further with the LEGAL ACTION AGAINST you.
